First Aid Tips

Become familiar with the proper uses of all the items in the wilderness medical kit before you need to use them.

Be prepared with medications for:

Minor emergencies such as headaches, mild to moderate allergic reactions, and gastrointestinal distress
More serious emergencies (when a doctor is far away) such as severe pain, infections, and allergic reactions.

Note: Use of all over-the-counter medications should follow directions on the label and/or directions from a physician. Use of all prescription medications should follow the directions of a physician.

Evaluate and repack the outdoor medical kit before every trip. Replace medications that have reached expiration dates and items damaged by heat, cold, or moisture. Replace items that are unnecessary for your particular trip – such as insect repellent on winter trips – with items that may be useful.

Encourage each group member to pack and carry a personal first aid kit in order to reduce the size and weight of the group outdoor medical kit.
