Maintain a high level
of fitness to prevent injury. Fitness is the single best way to avoid
an injury or overuse syndrome while backpacking. Hikers with a year-round
fitness plan end up "sidelined" with pain far less often
than those who say, "I'll get in shape on this trip." In
addition to more strength and endurance, the fit have less fat, and
every pound of extra body weight you shed means less stress on joints
and muscles, as well as less chance of injury.
